So You Want to Be an Expositor?

February 7, 2017 by bhacademic Leave a Comment

by Greg Harris

To become a seasoned expositor of God’s Word requires a method, or a series of specific steps. Equally important, however, is one’s starting point, which is, sadly, quite often lacking. One’s starting point is important not only for learning how to become a better expositor, but also as a means of attaining reverence for God, another aspect of biblical exposition that is often overlooked. In short, we start—and stay—with God.

I have had the high privilege and calling of teaching Bible Exposition classes for more than thirty years. Very often, when I finish a class on a book such as Isaiah or Hebrews, students will sigh and say, “Oh, if we could only go back to the beginning of the Bible and do what we are doing now, it would be so tremendously rewarding!” I agree—such is the richness of God’s Word. However, I remind them that if we were to do that, they would be in seminary for twenty or more years and never leave our campus or go to minister to churches or institutions. Yet it is in response to this desire, and through God’s sovereignty, that the current volume, The Expositor’s Handbook: Old Testament Edition, has come into existence.

Greg Harris Explains ‘The Bible Expositor’s Handbook of the Old Testament’

February 2, 2017 by bhacademic Leave a Comment

The Bible Expositor’s Handbook of the Old Testament provides a thorough introduction to the attitudes and practices required to deeply understand the message of the Old Testament. Exhorting students of Scripture to approach the Old Testament with an attitude of humility and expectation, Greg Harris lays the groundwork for a Christ-centered interpretation that takes into account the redemptive story of the whole Bible. Employing a literal-grammatical hermeneutic, Harris leads the reader through the process of observing, interpreting, and applying the Old Testament.

Dr. Greg Harris—department head and professor of Bible exposition at The Master’s Seminary in Sun Valley, California—shares in this 5-minute video how this volume can help those who want to gain a deeper understanding of the Old Testament, and how Jesus Christ is the key to understanding its various parts.

4 Ways the Minor Prophets Speak to Us Today

September 13, 2016 by bhacademic Leave a Comment

by Richard Alan Fuhr, Jr. and Gary E. Yates

TheMessageOfThe12_CVRHere are four specific ways in which the message of the Twelve—the Minor Prophets—continues to speak to the church as the people of God.

(1) The Book of the Twelve enriches the church with its distinctive portrayal of God.

In their preaching of judgment and salvation, the prophets reveal both God’s justice and grace. When Israel sinned by worshipping the golden calf at the beginning of their history as a nation, the Lord revealed himself as a God who is compassionate, slow to anger, rich in faithful love, and truth (Exod 34:6–7). These attributes led God to keep his covenantal commitments and to forgive the sins of his people.

The Book of the Twelve is the story of how Israel experiences these same attributes of Yahweh centuries later. At the beginning of the Twelve, the Lord promises Israel that he cannot give them up and that he would not “vent the full fury” of his wrath even when disciplining them for their sins (Hos 11:8–9). The Twelve as a whole reflect how the Lord keeps this specific promise to preserve his people. The Lord brings his various “days” of judgment against Israel and Judah, but even at the end, a remnant remains.

We Need to Hear the Minor Prophets

September 8, 2016 by bhacademic Leave a Comment

by Richard Alan Fuhr, Jr. and Gary E. Yates

TheMessageOfThe12_CVRWe offer this work on the Book of the Twelve (or the Minor Prophets as they are known in the English Old Testament) with the conviction that the message of these prophets is especially relevant for the church in the turbulent times in which we live. The Minor Prophets offer a compelling portrayal of God through vivid and dramatic metaphors. In judgment, the God of Israel is like a fierce warrior, a roaring lion, a raging whirlwind, and a consuming fire.

And yet, the same prophets who employ these frightening images also assure us that in his work of salvation, the Lord is a faithful husband, a loving Father, a healer who restores, and a compassionate shepherd. David Wells wrote some time ago,

It is one of the defining marks of Our Time that God is now weightless. I do not mean by this that he is ethereal but rather that he has become unimportant. He rests upon the world so inconsequentially as not to be noticeable. He has lost his saliency for human life. Those who assure the pollsters of their belief in God’s existence may nonetheless consider him less interesting than television, his commands less authoritative than their appetites for affluence and influence, his judgments no more awe-inspiring than the evening news, and his truth less compelling than the advertiser’s sweet fog of flattery and lies.

The prophets remind us that God cannot be pushed to the margins of our lives or trivialized and manipulated into fulfilling our personal agendas. The prophets restore a vision of God’s immensity and challenge us to worship and revere him above all else.

How to Better Understand the Minor Prophets

September 6, 2016 by bhacademic Leave a Comment

ZephaniahThe Minor Prophets ministered for over three centuries in the most tumultuous times in Israel’s history, yet their message remains relevant for the chaotic times in which we live. The Old Testament prophets courageously confronted the sinfulness and idolatry of God’s people and called for repentance. They offered reminders of Yahweh’s sovereignty over the nations in times of international crisis, painting unforgettable images of God in the process. They warned of catastrophic judgment but also pointed to the future hope of Messiah’s kingdom of peace when all would be made right in the world.

Eugene Merrill on Doing Old Testament Theology as a Christian

January 1, 2016 by bhacademic Leave a Comment

by Eugene Merrill

Book Cover of Everlasting Dominion: A Theology of the Old Testament by Eugene Merrill

It is impossible for the Christian theologian to ignore the New Testament for even if he does not (or in our case cannot) continue the pursuit of biblical theology to the conclusion of the whole canon, he cannot escape his tradition and the conscious or even subconscious baggage that that entails. He cannot read the Old Testament apart from the deep impress and impact of the New Testament upon his psyche to say nothing of trying to present a coherent, objective theological construct devoid of any input from the New Testament.

We confess, then, to having done an Old Testament theology through a Christian New Testament lens and for this offer no apology. What is required in the ideal is that a work like this should move beyond the Hebrew Scriptures to trace the theological themes that have been surfaced to their logical, theological, and canonical conclusions in the Greek Bible, the two parts thus yielding the fullness of the saving message.
