“We, at Preaching Today, are really excited about this new commentary series from B&H! This is one we would highly recommend keeping your eye out for as each new volume become available. Here are some of the highlights that we really appreciate in this series. The series as a whole seeks to put each book’s themes in the context of the entire canon, hence the title Biblical Theology for Christian Proclamation. This alone would make it the top of our list, but the content is academic and weighty, while being understandable and readable. We have finally found a commentary that is easy to read and understand! We really like the outline of each section as well—Context, Exegesis, and Bridge. Very straightforward way to treat each section, in this case the book of Hebrews. The “Bridge” section is extremely valuable to pastors who are preaching through entire books of the Bible, as it helps set up what has just been exegeted and what will be discussed in the next sermon.” [Read more…]

In Memory of John R. Kohlenberger III

October 2, 2015 by bhacademic Leave a Comment

os scholar becomes studentBy Steve Bond

Bible scholar and author John R. Kohlenberger III passed away on September 29, 2015. He was 64 years old.

John was both a visionary and a highly accomplished craftsman in the service of making Scripture more accessible to the academy, the person in the pew, and those who had not found their way to a pew. The well-conceived system of Bible concordances he built with Ed Goodrick provided the foundation for a large family of Bible reference products that have facilitated Bible study at all levels. He began this good work before the digital age, and it will only be enhanced and made more widely available as the digital age advances.

In the decade of the 1990s he worked with B&H Publishing Group as a typesetter of a student Bible and on the Holman Bible Atlas. He had an eye for the aesthetics of typesetting as well as a passion for accuracy.

When he first learned that he had advanced prostate cancer on September 27, 2002, he wrote to B&H with some questions about the availability of some editions of the One Minute Bible. His practice was to buy copies of this unique resource he had envisioned and designed in order to give them away—especially to those outside the church. He referred to this marvelous tool as “the world’s largest tract.”

John rubbed shoulders with some of the most accomplished biblical scholars in the world, but he never forgot that Scripture and its life-giving message was for all peoples. For most of us, the Bible is an intimidating library because of its sheer size and difficulty. And yet, John, in the same spirit of William Tyndale, believed the Bible to be widely accessible. And, in the One Minute Bible, he built a bridge over which a person with little or no knowledge of the Bible could walk and begin to savor the Scriptures in manageable portions. It was as if he said to his reader, “Come with me and let’s walk through this marvelous library together.”  Revelation 14:13.

B&H Publishing Joins Forces with Lifeway Church Resources

January 16, 2015 by bhacademic Leave a Comment

Centennial_Tower,_LifeWay_HQ,_Nashville

We wanted to take time out from our normal posting to share some exciting news: B&H Publishing has just merged with Lifeway Church Resources to form Lifeway Resources.  You can find additional details, including statements from our former and new leaders, here.

Joining with Church Resources will enable B&H to work more closely with our curriculum developers and allow us to better share ideas and resources.  We are happy to announce, though, that this will not change our mission, staff, or the B&H name, which will remain on all of our titles.  We look forward to continuing to serve you in 2015 and beyond!
